Pastor Jerry Conklin has served as pastor of Lewis and Clark Bible Church in Astoria, Oregon for
23 years. He has made four trips to Uganda and together with his Uncle, Pastor Bob Emrich,
has helped with the training of pastors. The training has included such topics as: a survey of the
Book of Ephesians; instruction in The Characteristics of a Healthy Church; and training in Bible
Study Methods. He has most recently (2013) written a booklet entitled, “First Steps with Jesus”
which has been translated into Lugandan. Plans are, in the November 2013 trip, to provide
instruction to the pastors in the use of the booklet in helping new believers to become well-
founded in basic Bible truths and spiritual disciplines. Lewis and Clark Bible Church has assisted
the pastors and churches by providing funds for Bibles, scholarships for orphaned children, and
funds to purchase medical supplies.
Laura Conklin serves at Lewis and Clark Bible Church as a pastor’s wife in many different roles
and ministries. She is employed as a Teacher’s Assistant at Lewis and Clark Elementary School
in Astoria, Oregon. She made a trip to Uganda in 2012 and supervised the VBS ministry to
children both at Sunrise Christian School and Living Hope Christian School. She also provided
instruction and assistance to the teachers.
Carissa Conklin has made four trips to Uganda, mostly assisting with ministry to children. She
has also gone on numerous home visits. She has presented the gospel using the “Wordless
Book” in many different venues (in home visits; in VBS settings; and in pastor conferences).
Over the course of time she has established many friendships in the Kabaale Village community
and with pastors and wives of the alliances. Her most recent visit, with Julie Smith, lasted for
about two months. Carissa and Julie had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the
daily routing in the villages and the challenges associated with that.
